dinner 7-30-08

Having marinated the pork for 10 hours, we bbqd them and they were very very juicy served with grilled scallions on top, mashed buttery potatoes underneath, sliced grilled yellow beets, braised cauliflower and brussel sprouts and my favorite bite on the plate....cold corn relish, corn off the cob, brandywine tomato chunks, balsamic vinegar and chopped white sweet onions.......yummy!

of farm stands and veggies and berries all in a row!

I am already wondering how i will survive winter and the lack of farmer's market tuesdays, this week yielded such a bounty of goodness I am beside myself with excitement.....miniature heirloom tomatoes, curly leaf lettuce picked that morning, orange mint, strawberries that are small and so sweet you just drool to see them, I remember growing them as a kid in so cal and just never letting them get bigger than a golf ball, and here i get to buy the same small sweet natural ones, so unlike those horrid monsters that the chain stores sell, the big as your fist strawberry with no flavor is not my idea of a fruit you eat! ok i also splurged and got some cranberry walnut bread from the grateful bread company of sacramento......so yummy! not cheap but good as a treat once in a while! I got some elberta peaches, freestone! and yummy and still firm, not lasting long in this house! 2 bunches of orange beets and one of small carrots, you know the ones that grow in the ground and have green leafy tops on them, not those plastic bagged orange chips some machine churns out in the dark.........carrots with dirt on them, you know earth, dirt, water, sun and seed can equal food in some parts of the world! I am only disappointed by the blackberries i bought from placerville, they just are so tart and flavorless.....not ripe yet i suspect! Cannot wait until next tuesday to see what the stalls hold for me!

You know you are in trouble whennnnn...........

Having perused the menu for going on 2 months and hoping that our trip to the bay area would include a brunch at Rudy's Can't Fail Cafe, I was overjoyed when it was suggested we meet up with hubby's friends on sunday morning at said location!!!! I knew the menu, had a clue as to the atmosphere and arrived hungry! Let me say right now, that it is Wednesday after the said Sunday and I am still thinking about the great food and trying to figure out how any subsequent trips could include a stop in emeryville....hmmm headed to disneyland, can we find a shortcut through emeryville? LOL So our largish group was seated in the back room and I horrifyingly had a prime view of the monkey paintings on the wall.....the sea monkey room....i have that fear of monkeys thanks to the wizard of oz and the flying version that haunted my preteen sleep for years.....i avoid them at all costs and here i was about to eat food while staring at some, but guess what the food was good enough to almost make me forget monkey images were present at the tasting! I knew i was ordering the rude and reckless and wanted em to have his new fave french toast, so i got to taste that also......very very YUMMY, our server was great, company sublime and I just wish i lived closer!

Whole Foods opens in Reno!

Granted, not close enough to be my everyday grocery store, but close enough for monthly fixes of fine quality ingredients.......bad picture of the prepped food/salad bar area.....so excited to get to buy ricks picks phat beets! and my favorite Hint brand water and of course nice fresh fruit! Kind of a small whole foods, but better than the wild oats they bought and moved!

Saying it (well typing it) is the first step

I admit it I am a foodie my endless searches for strange and specific ingredients, my desire to taste it all, my continual consumption of new items, my photo snapping before tasting beautiful plates of food, my top chef, tv food network, anthony bourdain watching habits all scream it loud and clear foodie here

May 2008

Ok Ok OK I know.....long time no post, suffice to say I have been busy doing other things, mundane life things! For example I spent most of last week cooking these gourmet meals for the family and of course neglected to take one picture, bad chef! All were well received but left me utterly burned out and leg sore from all the standing, mixing, cooking, chopping , cleaning dishes jaunt! I cooked lunch and dinner and breakfast on saturday so i reckon that was 13 meals, hot, semi complicated meals and then lost my desire yesterday, made hubby a cold pastrami sandwich for lunch and then begged him to take me to dinner....we went out and had yummy cheese enchilada's for cinco de mayo! so I must get back on the gourmet gambit......making lime custard pie for dessert tonight, making it now to chill, and bbq corn and burgers for dinner, macaroni salad and turkey roll ups for lunch.......not the most adventurous but more effort than left over pulled pork! We have had some great strawberries and corn already this season......asparagus has been hit and miss...I cannot wait for the farmer's market to start up again!

Saturday

soooooo with some work, read effort, we have managed to get our son to sleep in his crib part of the week for naps and nighttime sleep....never our desire to have him in our bed but he developed the skill, read controlling behavior, at 8 months of sticking his hand down his throat to throw up so that we could not leave him in his crib.....having to change the sheets, clean up and change his clothes, while this was being done we would let him lay in our bed for the diaper change and "down" time while the bedding was being changed....of course it took enough time that he fell asleep in our bed, ohhh so cute and after the turmoil we would let him finish the night out in our bed.....well this puke fest suddenly began happening earlier and in any circumstance that he disliked, the playpen while mom took out the trash.......the car when he wanted to play with the dog in the house........the swing when mom needed to shower..........the floor if dad tried to make coffee while not giving him enough attention.........it seemed to become the hand in mouth gag horrid noise and if we got to him soon enough circumvent liquid mess 24 hour a day show! While we tried various methods to change the behavior nothing worked....the crib became an island on which if he even put one toe he would scream and gag until we removed him..........still we have to put him in while he is asleep but since he is finally eating enough to stay asleep more than 2 hours....we can actually leave him in the crib asleep.......last nite 6 hours!!!!! (NOTE: smart hubby ordered a bear box thousand dollar unit to be installed in our driveway last week, they never showed........since the bears need 23,000 calories a day this time of year they are relentless, entering homes to get food...they took out our front yard birdfeeder 2 weeks ago, now i am afraid to fill the one in the back yard) UNTIL at 4am the bears came to dine on our trash...waking the loud dog we love who barked and barked waking the boy we love....who wanted to play feeling refreshed having slept for 6 hours!!!! we wanted more sleep , tried giving him a bottle, he took 3 oz....yeah lots!!! he still wanted to play, but then gurgled and puked all of it all over our bed , sheets, matress pad, floor and pillow cases.......lots!!! so laundry at 5 am....2 loads!!!! still no sleep for the little monster.....so we got up did the coffee , oatmeal, toast routine with crazy playing boy........knowing we were doomed for the day!!! Thankfully about 11am he relents into a forced nap...we all nap, including the dog on our bed....we awake to wet sheets, bottom sheets.....the dog has wet the bed, comforter, top sheet, bottom sheet and mattress pad......3 loads of laundry.......no spare mattess pad to make the bed, our 1st puked on one is on the outdoor line to sun dry.....not dry yet, at 7pm......hmmm shoulda bought another one today!!! My husband thinks he needs to work more to be able to rest, since home seems more work than work! We escape the house and head for the laundry free zone of the playground.......meant for bigger kids but we can watch them play, use the baby slide and swing, a few hours in the shady sunlit forest, crawling through bark and grass and pine needles......and all i notice is the younger babies walking on their own and get convinced that even though i know he will walk when he is ready to........i must be doing something wrong as a sahm full time caregiver to this miracle tiny tot......he was slow to sit up, slow to crawl, although he did roll everywhere early, he communicates some wants early but the walking just is a visual evidence of my failing!! Having been trying to eat healthier, vegis, fish, no meat, lots of fruit whole grains, legumes, we relent and have mcdonalds tonight for dinner, and hubby is convinced he is gonna puke.....feels dizzy and hot........ugh no more PUKE!!!
